Our Favorite Vik Restaurants
Throughout our South Coast expedition in Iceland, we found ourselves in Vik on two separate occasions — once for a satisfying lunch break and again as a convenient layover on our return journey. Here, we highlight our top recommendations for dining experiences and the delectable dishes we indulged in along the way.
Black Crust Pizzeria
Vik’s Black Crust Pizzeria beckons pizza enthusiasts to savor a unique dining escapade at the edge of the earth. Here, traditional notions of pizza toppings take a backseat to the star attraction: the crust. Crafted from a blend of wheat and barley flours infused with volcanic ash, each bite carries a distinctive earthy sweetness. We kicked off our meal with a delightful cheese bread appetizer before delving into their signature pizzas. The #1 featured Icelandic langoustine, truffle-infused cream cheese, red onions, rosemary, fresh basil, and chili, while the #2 showcased marinated duck, cream cheese, spring onion, syrup-soaked orange, cashew, and chili. Amidst the rustic charm of exposed stone walls and cozy booths, every slice embodies Vik’s untamed spirit, inviting diners to relish the unexpected flavors of this remote locale.
Ströndin • Pub
Entering Ströndin Pub in Vik felt like stepping into a comforting embrace amidst the stark Icelandic landscape. The inviting ambiance, characterized by warm lighting and exposed stone walls, immediately instilled a sense of relaxation. Our culinary journey began with a shared platter of fresh calamari, boasting perfectly crispy rings and succulent buffalo wings that offered a nostalgic nod to our favorite American sports bars, albeit with an Icelandic twist.
For my main course, the fish and chips proved to be a revelation. The fish, sourced directly from the icy waters of the Atlantic, melted in the mouth, encased in a golden, grease-free batter. Meanwhile, my wife’s lamb chops were equally delightful, cooked to a tender pink and bursting with flavor. Each mouthful served as a testament to the exceptional quality of ingredients and culinary mastery at Ströndin Pub, establishing it as a must-visit destination for those craving a satisfying and comforting meal in Vik.
Drangar Restaurant in Hotel Kria
Stepping into Drangar Restaurant at Hotel Kria was akin to entering a culinary haven. The sleek, modern interior, offering panoramic views of Vik’s dramatic coastline, set the stage for an unforgettable dining experience. My brother-in-law, a seasoned chef, and his girlfriend, equally skilled in the culinary arts, were immediately captivated. Their culinary journey commenced with a steaming bowl of seafood soup, brimming with the essence of the ocean and adorned with fresh Icelandic catches. The beef tartar, presented with Icelandic flair, offered a harmonious blend of textures and flavors, leaving them craving more.
Yet, it was the Arctic char and the duck that stole the spotlight. The char, impeccably cooked and bathed in a creamy dill sauce, unveiled the delicate sweetness of the fish, while the glazed duck, accompanied by a medley of seasonal vegetables, exemplified the perfect balance of sweet and savory. Each bite echoed the restaurant’s dedication to utilizing fresh, local ingredients and employing innovative culinary techniques. Undoubtedly, the professional endorsement from my brother-in-law and his partner underscores the remarkable quality and creativity embodied by Drangar Restaurant.
Vik Restaurants That We Missed
These are the restaurants that eluded us, either due to seasonal closures during the winter or simply because our schedule didn’t permit. If circumstances had been different — with ample time and favorable seasonal conditions — these establishments would have been integral parts of our culinary exploration in Vik.
Skool Beans
Tucked away in the quaint village of Vik, Skool Beans defies the norms of your typical cafe. Stepping into this repurposed school bus instantly transports visitors to a snug retreat, where the air is filled with the enticing scent of freshly roasted coffee and the allure of indulgent treats. However, the true standout at Skool Beans is their renowned hot chocolate. Crafted with a secret blend of decadent Belgian chocolate and crowned with a generous dollop of homemade whipped cream, each sip promises a luxurious voyage for the palate. Whether you opt for the traditional rendition or venture into their inventive varieties like the “Volcano Spice” enriched with Icelandic lava salt, Skool Beans’ hot chocolate offers a soul-warming treat that harmonizes perfectly with Vik’s awe-inspiring landscapes.
The Soup Company
Ever since I caught wind of The Soup Company in Vik, Iceland, I’ve been drawn to its allure, particularly its renowned bread bowls crafted from volcanic flour. The thought of a steaming, wholesome soup cradled within a crusty bread bowl infused with volcanic ash is utterly enticing. I can only envision the distinct flavor and texture that the volcanic flour imparts to the bread, undoubtedly complementing the luscious and creamy soups on their menu. With its inviting ambiance and delectable fare, The Soup Company beckons as the perfect haven to unwind and replenish following a day of immersing oneself in Vik’s breathtaking landscapes.
Restaurant Suður-Vík
Suður-Vík Restaurant in Vik captivated me from the moment I heard the words “lamb and Arctic char.” The very idea of these Icelandic culinary delights, prepared in a historic establishment overlooking the rugged coastline, set my stomach rumbling with anticipation. I envisioned myself indulging in tender, slow-roasted lamb infused with local herbs and spices, each bite a savory delight. The thought of savoring the velvety Arctic char, perhaps pan-seared to perfection with a crispy skin and adorned with a creamy dill sauce, ignited my culinary imagination. Unfortunately, my timing led me to encounter their seasonal closure, leaving me with a wistful longing for the flavors I missed.
But fear not, fellow food enthusiasts! Suður-Vík Restaurant will reopen its doors come spring, promising a harmonious blend of tastes to captivate your palate and warm your spirit.
