I always search for unique travel experiences to share with our kids, helping them connect with history and culture firsthand. That passion led me to Shash Dine EcoRetreat, a unique Airbnb just 15 minutes from Page, Arizona.
Shash Dine EcoRetreat offers several accommodations, but the Traditional Navajo Hogan stood out. This unique Airbnb stay gave us a rare chance to experience Navajo tradition in northern Arizona. Let’s dive into our experience and see if this one-of-a-kind stay is right for you.
Booking
Finding this accommodation felt like a win, but I quickly realized the Hogan was listed for four people, and we had a family of five—two adults and three children. Unsure if it could work for us, I reached out to the hosts, Baya and Paul, through Airbnb to see if they could accommodate our entire family. Since this was a unique Airbnb experience, I wanted to ensure everyone had enough space to be comfortable during our stay.
To my relief, they responded quickly, letting me know they could add an extra cot and bedding for a small additional fee, which we could pay at check-in. Their prompt and friendly communication made the booking process smooth and stress-free. This quick response was especially important because they only had one night available during our travel dates. The Hogan books up nearly two months in advance, so securing it before someone else did felt like a lucky break. Their willingness to make accommodations for our family only added to the excitement of experiencing this one-of-a-kind stay.

Glen Canyon Dam stands as an engineering marvel, offering breathtaking views and historical insight into the region’s water systems. With so many natural wonders within easy reach, Shash Dine EcoRetreat makes an excellent base for exploring the beauty of northern Arizona.
Check-in
Check-in felt welcoming and personal as Baya provided clear directions on where to arrive on her property. She greeted us warmly and led us to the Hogan, sharing insights into its history and the traditional methods used to build it. Since the Hogan relies on a wood-burning stove for heat, she asked if we knew how to use it. We confirmed that we did, but she reassured us that she and Paul happily teach guests, ensuring everyone feels comfortable during their stay.
Baya also pointed out key locations on the property, including the restrooms, showers, communal fire pit, breakfast area, and a scenic hiking trail. Her thoughtful introduction made settling in easy and gave us a deeper appreciation for the Hogan’s cultural significance. The check-in process felt more like being welcomed into someone’s home rather than just receiving keys, setting the tone for an unforgettable stay.
Unique AirBnB: Navajo Hogan
Built from juniper trees and clay, the Hogan provided a truly unique stay. Stepping inside, we found a surprisingly spacious interior, with five cots easily arranged around the perimeter. A small table near the entry held water, juice boxes, snacks, a lantern, towels, toiletries, and firewood for the stove. The red clay earth formed the floor, just like the exterior, but each cot had its own rug to place shoes on at night, adding a thoughtful touch of comfort.
At the Hogan’s center, a wood-burning stove served as both a functional necessity and a cozy focal point. Even as temperatures dropped to the mid-forties overnight, the thick clay walls trapped the heat, keeping us warm. The Hogan blended simplicity with practicality, offering everything we needed for a one-of-a-kind glamping experience rooted in Navajo tradition.
Food and Beverage
In the morning, we enjoyed a light breakfast featuring Navajo tea, brewed from herbs Baya grows on the property. Our kids especially loved the tea, while we sipped coffee and snacked on fresh fruit, yogurt, Nutri-Grain bars, and Pop-Tarts. The simple yet thoughtful spread provided a comforting start to the day.
The communal breakfast area created a warm and inviting atmosphere. A fire crackled in the fire pit, offering a cozy spot to shake off the morning chill. As we ate, we shared travel stories with other guests, making connections that added to the experience.
Amenities
Before arriving, we knew this was a highly rated glamping experience, not a luxury hotel. With that in mind, we expected simplicity but were blown away by how well-maintained and clean every area of the property was. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that Baya and Paul put great care into ensuring a comfortable stay. The restrooms consisted of two well-kept outhouses, one for men and one for women, both stocked with toiletries and equipped with solar lighting. Despite being off-grid, the setup never felt inconvenient.

The shower house featured two showers supplied with water delivered from off-site, meaning short showers were necessary to conserve the limited supply. Even with that in mind, the experience remained enjoyable, thanks to steaming hot water and a fun disco bar that added a unique touch. Our kids also loved the two on-site swings, making them a must-visit both on arrival and after breakfast before checkout. But the highlight of the night was gazing at the endless stretch of stars, a breathtaking view only possible in a place untouched by city lights.

Overall Impression Of Shash Dine EcoRetreat
Stepping into the Hogan for the first time as a family, we all felt a surge of excitement for the adventure ahead. The idea of staying in such a unique Airbnb, surrounded by history and nature, made the experience even more special. However, our 14-year-old daughter’s enthusiasm quickly faded when she realized the bathrooms were outhouses. She wasn’t thrilled about the rustic setup, and for a moment, we wondered if this stay would be a hit or a miss for her.
As the hours passed, the magic of the property took over. With no screens to distract us, we connected in ways that felt rare in our busy lives. We explored, laughed, and embraced the solitude of the desert. The peaceful surroundings and intimate family moments turned this stay into an instant favorite. By checkout, even our daughter, who had hesitated at first, felt disappointed that no extra nights were available. This wasn’t just a place to sleep—it was an experience, one that brought us closer as a family and created memories we’ll cherish forever.
