Secret Lagoon: My Review of History & Bliss

Secret Lagoon

As we bid farewell to the untouched splendor of Iceland’s South Coast, the prospect of saying goodbye didn’t quite settle in. Fortunately, our last destination greeted us with warmth – the Secret Lagoon, the oldest thermal pool on the island. Earning a consistent spot in the top three hot springs, the Secret Lagoon offered more than just a refreshing plunge; it was a guarantee of natural euphoria. However, given the diverse range of online reviews, ranging from sun-drenched paradise to overcrowded disappointment, we sought clarity. So, let’s delve into the experience, uncover its mysteries, and understand why Secret Lagoon served as the ideal conclusion to our South Coast expedition.

Secret Lagoon – Tickets

Opting out of online booking turned out to be a successful risk at Secret Lagoon! Similar to many hot springs, Secret Lagoon operates on a timed entry system. While this is crucial for planning during peak seasons, our visit took place in the off-season, allowing us to stroll in without the need for online reservations. We paid the entrance fee of $25.94 USD at the main building, where the welcoming staff informed us about the option to rent towels, although we had brought our own. While online booking can be advantageous for organized trips during peak times, our experience in the off-season demonstrated the flexibility that comes with the time of year and your willingness to embrace spontaneity.

After paying our entrance fee, we were ushered towards a TV playing a crucial safety video. Key points included:

  • Greet the receptionist: Before diving in, a quick check-in ensures everyone’s accounted for.
  • Shower, suitless: This Icelandic tradition promotes hygiene and pool cleanliness. Embrace the experience!
  • One pool, four hot zones: Enjoy the large pool, but remember, there are separate, scalding hot springs nearby (a whopping 212°F!). Admire them from afar.
  • Little ones, stay close: Children under 16 require adult supervision for safety reasons.

With safety instructions fresh in our minds, we made our way to the changing rooms. Cozy warmth replaced our shoes at the dedicated racks before entering the locker room. Each locker greeted us with a friendly bracelet and key, ready to secure our belongings. A quick rinse under the communal shower, equipped with convenient body wash and shampoo, primed us for the comforting embrace of the geothermal waters.

Stepping onto the icy ground, we hurried towards the pool’s inviting steps. The chill dissipated instantly as we immersed ourselves in the warm water. Together, we explored the pool, discovering varying temperatures in each corner as the hot springs whispered their secrets into the lagoon. The pebbled bottom provided a gentle massage for our feet, enhancing the overall sense of relaxation.

  • Pool and Steam

While an online review mentioned algae, we found none on the smooth pebbles lining the pool floor. However, some larger stones near the spring inlets displayed a touch of natural green. Rather than a deterrent, it served as a reminder of the pool’s authenticity and its connection to the raw beauty of Iceland.

For over two hours, we drifted and soaked, occasionally surprised by bursts of steam from the nearby geyser. The fresh snow on the ground, dusted by the escaping steam, created a magical winter scene. Finally, with relaxed muscles and content hearts, we hurried back to the locker room.

There, a delightful surprise awaited: an electric bathing suit dryer! After four cycles, my suit was perfectly dry, ready for the return journey. Back in our winter gear, we indulged in the offerings of the reception area. My wife sipped a latte while we both relished the lingering warmth of Secret Lagoon.

Final Thoughts

Our dip at Secret Lagoon transcended a simple swim. It was an immersion in the heart of Iceland’s natural magic, each corner whispering stories of the earth’s raw power. The gentle touch of the pebbled bottom, the invigorating bursts of steam, and the serene winter landscape painted with snow – all combined to create an unforgettable experience. We emerged not just refreshed, but rejuvenated, carrying within us a warmth that lingered long after leaving the pool.

If you’re planning an Icelandic adventure, I urge you not to miss this iconic gem, especially during the winter months. The contrast of the warm waters against the crisp air creates a unique and magical ambiance. And if you’ve already had the pleasure of soaking in Secret Lagoon, share your thoughts below!
