Concluding our unforgettable road journey through Texas and New Mexico in the vibrant spring of 2023, our next destination beckoned—an awe-inspiring natural wonder, Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Within its depths lie caverns sculpted by the forces of time and water, offering a one-of-a-kind adventure. Join me as I unveil a comprehensive guide to help you plan your own odyssey through Carlsbad Caverns, covering must-visit attractions, hidden treasures, and crucial tips for a successful subterranean excursion.
Carlsbad Caverns
For those unfamiliar with Carlsbad Caverns National Park, it was established in 1930 and earned the prestigious status of a World Heritage Site in 1995. Recognized globally, the park stands out as one of the most easily accessible and meticulously preserved cave complexes, located at a depth of 1,027 feet. Among its notable features is the renowned Big Room, an expansive limestone chamber that spans almost 4,000 feet in length, 625 feet in width, and reaches a height of 255 feet at its highest point. Significantly, the Big Room holds the distinction of being the largest chamber in North America and the 32nd largest in the world.
This underground marvel attracts visitors with its remarkable formations and historical significance. Carlsbad Caverns continues to captivate explorers, offering a unique glimpse into the subterranean wonders shaped over millennia.
Tickets
Anticipating our visit to the park, I proactively conducted research three months prior to uncover any nuances related to securing tickets. Drawing from our experience at Arches National Park, where timed entry systems were implemented to manage attendance, I found that Carlsbad Caverns also adopted this approach. Unlike the high demand we encountered at Arches, obtaining timed entry tickets for Carlsbad Caverns proved more accessible. This allowed us to secure tickets on the morning of our April arrival, aligning the entry time with our travel schedule. For those interested, reservation times can be purchased for a nominal fee of $1.00 by visiting Reservation.Gov through the provided link.
Upon reaching the Visitor Center, it is necessary to present your timed entrance reservation to acquire entry tickets, which remain valid for a duration of three days. The ticket prices are structured as follows:
- Adults (16 and older): $15 per person
- Children (15 and under): Free
- Pass Holders: Complimentary entry
- America the Beautiful—National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass, Senior Pass, Access Pass, Military Pass, or Volunteer Pass grants admission for the cardholder and up to three accompanying adults.
Cavern Tour Experience
After acquiring our entry tickets, the Ranger presented us with the choice of descending to the cavern’s bottom either by elevator or through a trek. We chose the walking path, and he directed us through an artifact room detailing the history of the caverns. This route led us outdoors, where another Ranger awaited to provide safety instructions and offer an overview of the caverns.
After the Ranger provided us with safety instructions and an intriguing history of the cavern’s discovery and initial exploration, we were given the green light to descend into the cavern via the switchbacks. The journey down was not without its challenges, as we navigated through a flock of birds near the entrance, mindful of their airborne presence and the occasional droppings. Reaching the cavern’s bottom marked a transition into a realm devoid of sunlight, accompanied by a noticeable drop in temperature. Equipped with sweatshirts, we found the consistent 56-degree environment year-round, emphasizing the need for adequate preparation.
As we descended, the path featured strategically placed benches, offering convenient spots to rest for those feeling fatigued. Despite the darkness, the park service effectively illuminated the stalagmites and stalactites, providing ambient lighting along the path. Upon reaching the cavern’s base, we faced a choice between exploring The Big Room and visiting The Rest Stop, equipped with restrooms and the elevator leading out. Opting for The Big Room first, a 1.2-mile path awaited us, with a .2-mile shortcut available and a .4-mile option for those solely interested in the Top of the Cross.
Concluding our cavern exploration, we decided to use the elevator for our exit. However, we encountered a setback as only one of the two elevators was operational, resulting in a lengthy queue that took an hour to navigate before finally exiting the cavern.
Overall Impressions of Carlsbad Caverns National Park
Our exploration of Carlsbad Caverns marked a distinctive experience, standing out as a colossal underground wonder compared to other caverns we’ve visited in different states. The park service’s meticulous lighting accentuated key areas, ensuring that no mesmerizing formations were missed during our tour. However, a notable drawback surfaced as only one elevator was operational during our visit. Upon conversing with a Ranger, we learned that this situation had persisted for several months. Had this information been communicated when purchasing tickets, we could have better prepared, especially for the kids, perhaps bringing additional snacks to alleviate the wait in the extended elevator line.
Despite this hiccup, our overall impression of Carlsbad Caverns remains highly positive. The sheer grandeur of the caverns and the thoughtful illumination by the park service make it a must-visit destination. We recommend including Carlsbad Caverns in your travel plans, particularly if you’re in the area or incorporating it into a broader exploration of National Parks, such as a visit to Big Bend National Park. The cavern’s unique features and the surrounding natural beauty contribute to a memorable and worthwhile experience for all adventurers.
